the game of life

Play with the lives of pixels, roll over squares to change, and use the radio buttons at the bottom.

At each pass, for each square, the script checks the state of the squares surrounding it. Depending on the number of active squares around it, the square might stay as is (let alone), turn white (kill) or turn grey (live). The script does not make the change until all squares have been checked.
0 live let alone kill
1 live let alone kill
2 live let alone kill
3 live let alone kill
4 live let alone kill
5 live let alone kill
6 live let alone kill
7 live let alone kill
8 live let alone kill
Any given game, depending on the starting state, and the rules of whether to leave alone, kill or live can make drastic changes in the way the squares live. It might quickly turn all white or grey; it might devolve into a steady state where nothing changes; it might go back in forth between several states; it might keep changing in no particular, or at least discernable fashion. I just find it fascinating to watch.
