The Dissemination of Cool

Yeah, some try to be cool. Ever catch a glimpse of a mission district girl riding a big tire bicycle with an oversized handlebar basket on her way to the local Salvation Army? Yeah, we grew up in a houseboat in Marin and we paid extra for that image.

Yeah, some had no choice but be cool. In hip-hop, ever wonder why we started wearing our pants ultra low, and what the fuck holds that shit up? Well, we couldn't afford designer jeans and the woman in the neighborhood that comes by once a year whom mom buys our clothes from only had the larger leftover sizes that didn't sell in the stores.

Book man once told me that good taste has two qualities: appropriateness and authenticity.

Trying seems to distance us from authenticity. Reactive keeps us close.

Over-enthusiasm seems to distance us from appropriateness. This one is tougher. I don't really like "appropriateness" in life, but design is sometimes the opposite of life.

Can someone please disseminate some cool!?!
